Come join the Consumer Experience (CX) Engineering team - we work on a diverse set of consumer problems spanning across core experiences that power the UX navigation and transaction funnels, search and discovery of content and services, user lifecycle covering user growth, engagement and loyalty and the critical platform mission of mobile application developer experience. We are on an exciting mission to connect consumers to Grab's marketplace by allowing them to discover and engage with Grab's services and partners.

Get to Know the Role

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join the CX Engineering team. You will design, build, and operate high-quality backend systems that power end-to-end consumer journeys across the Grab app—from login to the home and activity experiences.

You will champion AI-driven delivery, using AI-enabled engineering workflows to take well-defined requirements through planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation to a review-ready merge request. You will ensure these workflows consistently produce secure, reliable, and maintainable solutions while helping raise engineering standards across the team.

You will report to the Engineering Manager. This is an on-site role based in Jakarta.

The Critical Tasks You Will Perform

• Design, build, and operate backend services in Go, improving their availability, scalability, latency, reliability, and efficiency
• Use AI-assisted engineering workflows to deliver solutions from well-defined specifications to review-ready merge requests, including planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation
• Critically validate AI-generated solutions for correctness, security, performance, maintainability, and alignment with engineering standards
• Identify and lead AI-enabled engineering initiatives that improve developer productivity and delivery quality across the team
• Work with engineering team to explore and create new design / architectures geared towards scale and performance
• Participate in code and design reviews, helping maintain and raise the team’s engineering standards
• Perform capacity planning, performance analysis, tuning, and optimization for large-scale services
• Collaborate with product, design, and other engineering teams to define, refine, and prototype feature specifications
• Work closely with infrastructure teams to build and scale backend services and conduct root-cause investigations
• Diagnose and resolve complex problems across large-scale distributed systems
• Proactively investigate and resolve production incidents during on-call rotations
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and knowledge sharing to other engineers
• Take end-to-end engineering ownership of product and technical problems, collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders to monitor and achieve agreed success metrics.

Qualifications

What Essential Skills You Will Need

• A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field
• 5+ years of software engineering experience, preferably working with distributed systems
• Strong computer science fundamentals, including algorithms and data structures
• Experience operating large-scale web services, with a solid understanding of systems internals and networking
• Strong understanding of system performance, reliability, and scalability
• Proficiency in at least one programming language—such as Go, C++, Java, Scala, Rust, Python, Ruby, Node.js, or C#—and willingness to work with Go
• Demonstrated ability to use AI-assisted engineering workflows to turn spec-ready requirements into review-ready merge requests, including planning, implementation, testing, debugging, and documentation
• Ability to critically evaluate AI-generated solutions for correctness, security, maintainability, and alignment with engineering standards
• Ability to raise the backend engineering bar by identifying and leading AI-enabled technical initiatives that create measurable impact across the team or multiple teams
