Company Description

Veterinary Criticalist (ECC) | Part-Time Opportunity | Specialist or Registrar Pathway

Join Melbourne's leading multidisciplinary emergency and referral hospital

Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency (CARE) Veterinary Hospital in Collingwood, Melbourne, is looking for a second Veterinary Criticalist to join our highly regarded Emergency & Critical Care team. You will work in a specialist-led, collaborative multi-specialty setting, managing a varied and rewarding caseload while helping shape the future of our ECC service.

Whether you are a board-certified Criticalist, residency-trained clinician, or a registrar working towards credentialing, CARE offers a supportive environment focused on clinical excellence, professional growth, and exceptional patient care.

Why CARE?

Located in the vibrant inner-Melbourne suburb of Collingwood, CARE is one of Australia's most respected multidisciplinary referral and emergency hospitals. Our team is committed to delivering outstanding patient outcomes through collaboration, innovation, and a shared passion for veterinary medicine.

Within the department, you'll join Dr Christine Lovatt (DACVECC) and a team of Membership-qualified vets, experienced clinicians and interns. As part of a specialist referral hospital, you'll work closely with experts across multiple disciplines, ensuring seamless patient care and access to advanced diagnostics and treatment options.

Our ECC department manages a broad range of emergency and critical care presentations and is supported by a highly skilled nursing team and experienced clinicians who thrive in a collegial and supportive environment.

The Role

This is a purely clinical position focused on providing specialist-level critical care support and complex case management within our busy ECC service.

Roster & Structure

  • 2-4 days per week
  • Primarily day shifts with occasional evening work
  • Generally 9.5-hour workdays
  • Clinical floor shifts are 12 hours

Caseload

You will manage a diverse emergency and critical care caseload including:

  • Toxicities and poisonings
  • Envenomations
  • Acute abdominal emergencies
  • Cardiac emergencies
  • Multi-system critical care cases
  • Complex referral and ICU patients

Our Head of ECC, Dr Christine Lovatt, has particular interests in:

  • Blood banking
  • Therapeutic plasma exchange
  • Extracorporeal therapies

This creates excellent opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and exposure to advanced critical care techniques.

Team & Support

You will report directly to Dr Christine Lovatt, Head of ECC, and be supported by both Christine and Dr Sebastian Chua, ECC Vet Manager.

The role works closely with:

  • The wider ECC team
  • Specialists across multiple departments
  • Experienced emergency clinicians and nurses

Together, you'll help create strong patient pathways through the hospital while supporting high-quality clinical decision making and workflow management.

Who We're Looking For

We are seeking someone who:

  • Is ACVECC, ECVECC or FANZCVS (ECC) qualified, residency trained, or working toward specialist credentials
  • Enjoys managing complex and challenging medical cases
  • Thrives in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment
  • Has an approachable, easy-going personality and enjoys being part of a close-knit team
  • Is passionate about supporting and mentoring colleagues

Registrar-level candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. CARE is committed to supporting clinicians through their credentialing pathway while they continue to work clinically within the hospital.

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • 1 week of study leave annually
  • Study support allowance per year
  • Dedicated support for registrar-level candidates pursuing credentialing
  • Future equity opportunities may be available
  • Access to Greencross professional development and wellbeing initiatives including fitness passport, pet retail discounts and access to our EAP services
  • A collaborative, supportive and highly respected specialist hospital environment
  • The opportunity to work alongside a passionate team committed to clinical excellence

Next Steps

If you're looking to practice high-quality critical care medicine within a supportive, multidisciplinary referral environment, we'd love to hear from you.
